Bill Smith Motors was founded back in 1959 by Bill Smith. Bill was well known on the racing circuit - riding for Honda in 1959 on the first Japanese imported bikes to the UK. In 1998 Bill Smith Motors took on the Triumph Franchise at our showroom on Tarvin Road in Chester. Now run by Bill's children, Mark and Karen Smith have enjoyed many successful years selling the Triumph motorcycle range in Chester to our loyal and valued customers across Cheshire and the UK.
Triumph Motorcycles have a rich and storied history dating back to 1902, when the company first began producing motorized bicycles in Coventry, England. Founded by Siegfried Bettmann, a German immigrant, Triumph quickly established itself as a pioneer in the emerging motorcycle industry. By the 1920s, Triumph had become one of Britain's largest motorcycle manufacturers, known for building reliable, stylish bikes. Throughout the early 20th century, Triumph motorcycles earned a reputation for performance and innovation, securing their place both on the road and in competitive racing.
After World War II, Triumph reached the height of its fame with iconic models like the Thunderbird and the Bonneville, the latter becoming a symbol of British motorcycling worldwide. Triumph bikes were featured in Hollywood films and rode to legendary status by figures such as Steve McQueen. Despite its popularity, the company faced serious challenges in the 1970s due to increasing competition from Japanese manufacturers. After a period of decline and a brief closure, Triumph was revived in the 1980s by entrepreneur John Bloor. Under Bloor’s leadership, Triumph modernized its production facilities and introduced a new range of motorcycles, ensuring its survival and resurgence. Today, Triumph remains one of the most respected and beloved motorcycle brands, proudly continuing its legacy of British engineering excellence.
